"Oj more duboko" (Ahoy deep sea) by SUSAK One of the most popular Dalmatian song. Lyrics romantically describe the relation between people of Dalmatia and the deep blue Sea.
"More" (The Sea) by Klapa TROGIR A beautiful Dalmatian song about the Sea. Harmonization of this capella is great. With many national and international awards klapa TROGIR is one one of the best capella group in Europe.
"Oj Novaljo" (Ahoy Novalja) by klapa Novalja Novalja is a small village on Island of Pag. With very harmonic and minor sad sound this song sings about love for the native village.
"Licko kolo" (Lika's Kolo) by ZAVICAJ KOLO, a folk dance usually danced in circle is mostly associated with interior Croatia. Lika, a central part of Croatia is a region where KOLO is sang and danced at just about any occasion. Listen to a KOLO played on Tamburitza and accordion.
Croatian Ethnic and Folk music reflects very much history and places from where a particular music comes from. From melodic and harmonic capella songs from Dalmatia, Istrian diatonic scale songs, to Lika, Zagorje, Slavonia and other places. I uploaded few songs that pretty much represent the region of origin. Enjoy it and have fun..
Carneval in Rijeka Opatija, Lovran, Rabac, Buje, Mali Losinj The first Rijeka Carnival was held in 1982. It had only three performer groups in its parade and it was neither famous nor popular. The groups were "Lako ćemo", "Pehinarski feštari" and "Halubajski zvončari". All three groups have participated in the carnival each time since the beginning. The largest event happened in 2001 with 144 groups participating. Because of the restrictions that have been made regarding the number of participants in each group, the 2008 carnival had only 99 groups. Nonetheless, 100,000 visitors attended it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijeka_Carnival
Moreska Folk Dance - Island of Korcula The town of Korcula is well known for MORESKA – a traditional sword dance and drama that was common through the Mediterranean in 12th and 13th century, reaching Korcula in 16th century from Italy and Dubrovnik. The dance originated in Spain and is associated to the conflict between Moors and Christians. In Dalmatia its popularity was almost certainly linked with the struggles against Ottoman Empire, above all with the victory over a Battle of Lepanto, the first major Ottoman defeat by the Christian powers, which ended the myth of Ottoman naval invincibility. Through the centuries Moreska vanished from the Mediterranean and now days is only to be find in Korcula, where it is performed for over 400 yrs. Briefly, the dance follows the story of the conflict between the Red King (locally called "White") versus Black King and their soldiers, as Bula - the Red King's fiancée is captured by Black army. Following the dialogues between Kings, the romantic and ritualized sword battle starts, and is performed in seven circles representing seven different dances with swords. Finally Black King is conquered and Bula happily returns into arms of her bellowed Red King. http://www.korculainfo.com/moreska_korcula.htm
